As we build the nation we cannot afford to ignore the fact the strength of women and their contribution towards building this beautiful nation. Indeed as Olasimbo Sojinrin, Country Manager Solar Sister Nigeria rightly noted, ‘The role of women in building stronger economies cannot be over-emphasized’. We celebrate that.
At Roofings Group, we have 54 women who daily enable us to be the ‘strength of the nation’ that we are. We celebrate them.
This year’s international women’s day celebrations are anchored on the theme, “Choose to Challenge!” There is indeed so much more to do. There are a lot more barriers to break for women to realise their full potentials, find peace and equality. For example, Uganda still has a high rate of reported GBV4 with the 2011 Uganda Demographic Household Survey indicating that 60 % of women report having experienced some form of violence. And, despite Unemployment among women increasing from 8.9 percent in 2012 to 13.2 percent in 2017 according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics, women are still side-lined for employment opportunities. We are choosing to challenge such statistics and mind-sets. You too should and we celebrate you for that choice!
We cannot, however, ignore the women that have found it within themselves to challenge the status quo to sprout out into strong leaders in their communities, industries, organisations and nations. We celebrate those that are inspired by such strong women to define concrete career paths. We choose to celebrate the mothers, widows and single mothers in this country that have challenged the fears that could have clouded their devotion to raising the next generations of this world.
As the Roofings family as well, we proudly showcase and acknowledge our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters, by confidently raising our hands to be a part of those who promise to call out and challenge gender bias and inequality. We also raise the same hand in support and recognition of those that are fully committed to fighting these negative statistics. Indeed, there is still so much more to do. Raise your hand if you believe the same.
